Our Magnet Program
Our Magnet Program
Milwee Middle School is a Pre-Engineering Magnet for grades 6 to 8. Our pre-engineering curriculum challenges all students to design, build, test, and program real solutions.
How we do it
- An advanced curriculum built around math, science, investigation, and discovery
- The engineering design process
- Coding in video game design, robotics, and web design
- Work with community leaders to build future-ready skills
An IB Middle Years Programme candidate school
Milwee is a candidate school for the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP). The MYP connects learning across subjects and applies it to real-world problems. Students:
- Combine ideas from different subjects to solve problems, the way engineers combine physics, math, and design
- Look at global issues from more than one viewpoint
- Build skills in communication, collaboration, self-management, research, and thinking
- Use the MYP design cycle in Design courses, alongside Project Lead the Way
Every student studies Language and Literature, Mathematics, Sciences, and Individuals and Societies each year. Students also take electives in the Arts, Design, Language Acquisition, and Physical and Health Education, so every student takes a world language every year. See the Curriculum Guide for course descriptions.
Milwee Middle School is a candidate school for the IB Middle Years Programme. Candidate status does not guarantee authorization. Visit the International Baccalaureate Website for more information.
Project Lead the Way
Milwee is the only SCPS middle school that offers Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Gateway. Project Lead the Way engages students in hands-on, collaborative problem solving focused on real-world challenges, and students step into roles across the engineering career landscape.
PLTW Gateway courses
- Design & Modeling 1 and 2
- Science of Technology
- Automation and Robotics
- Medical Detectives
- Green Architecture
- Building for the Future (coming 2027-2028)
- Energy & the Environment
- Flight and Space
- Innovators and Makers
- App Creators
- Magic of Electrons
Also in Design
- Exploring AI
Arts and Music
At Milwee the arts are part of the magnet, not a break from it. Engineers and designers sketch before they build, tune what they make, and present it to an audience. Our arts electives build those habits in the same school where students model parts and program robots. Every MYP student takes at least one Arts course each year, and our arts courses fall into three areas: Visual Arts, Music, and Stage, Screen & Media.
Beyond the classroom
Students build on their engineering skills with teams, clubs, and field trips.
Year-long teams (application required, grades 6 to 8)
- Robotics Competition Team: Design, build, and program a robot, then compete against teams from other schools.
- Technology Student Association (TSA): Compete in STEM challenges and grow as a leader.
Also at Milwee
- VEX Robotics
- Student Astronaut Challenge
- SECME Club
- Girls Engineering Breakfast Club
School-wide field trips
- 6th grade: SeaWorld Orlando, with live animal encounters
- 7th grade: Lake Lotus Park, with instruction from chemists and engineers
- 8th grade: Kennedy Space Center, with immersive NASA simulators and exhibits
How to apply
To apply, submit an online application. Students who submit an application on time are given priority placement.
